Abstract
The article considers social structures and social relations in small towns. Central terms are explained, an overview of the state of research is given and open research questions for small towns are identified. The article shows that socio-structural factors scarcely play a role in current research on small towns and that promising in-depth investigations conducted in the past have seldom been further developed. Social relations are usually included in scientific research but these often traditional descriptions tend to cling to the image of small towns as being particularly close-knit and characterised by a specific social narrowness.
