Abstract

Vienna's high quality of living is well-known around the world. The large number of greenspace within the city borders is seen as one of the major reasons for making this city so livable. But this is not given: a number of historical decisions led to the fact that today the Wienerwald, Lobau, Prater, Donauinsel, and many historical parks and gardens still exist. However, the on-going population growth still demands space for new residential areas. The city has to plan smart and far into the future to keep living in Vienna as attractice as today. Especially in regard of advancing climate change. The plan "Leitbild Grünräume", which was decided on in June 2020, is seen as another historical milestone by defining "unnegotiable" greenspaces and adding vast formerly unprotected agricultural areas to this list – especially in the east and south of Vienna. Thus, the city development in the up-coming decades is restricted and will only take place in areas where it doesn't harm the overall Vienna green and open space system.
