Abstract
The diverse regional effects of large-scale protected areas in Germany have been subject to investigation ever since the designation of the first national park in the Bavarian Forest. Formally protected areas as stipulated in the Federal Nature Conservation Act (national parks, nature parks, biosphere reserves) are of particular relevance here, but informal categories (regional parks, geo-parks, dark sky reserves), which are designated following regional initiatives, are also of increasing importance. All categories trigger positive spirals of value creation that bring economic and social stability to the usually peripheral rural regions concerned.
