Abstract
These days self-driving cars are often depicted as the major upcoming revolution within mobility sector. Curiously, this trend has mostly kept unnoticed within the railroad industry - it even seems that branch-specific challenges have not yet been fully analyzed or understood by decision makers within these industry. This article discusses that not only self-driving vehicles but also further technological novelties do exist: for the rail-bound business model most of them are leading to severe strategic threats. Consequently, this articles major aim is to raise awareness for those latest technological innovations which might have disruptive challenges for the railroad industry.
