Abstract

The study based on a pan-European survey of railway undertakings and shipper/loader conducted by the international management consultancy Droege & Comp., in cooperation with Professor Dr. Gerd Aberle, delivered important insights into current market and competitive conditions, expected developments and entrepreneurial reactions to present and anticipated changes. The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows: 1) Rail freight traffic is growing. The most important growth regions can be seen in Russia or in cross-border transports on the east-west-axis. Concerning operations, this growth is closely interlinked with steady growing average haul distances. 2) Liberalization is not a one-way street to success but increases pressure on efficiency improvement for ail market players. 3) Alliance models are gradually enlarged. Especially when resources (e.g. wagon capacity or infrastructural access) are the limiting factor, railway undertakings tend to form alliances. difu
