Abstract
In Regensburg the attempt to come to terms with the building heritage has a long tradition. Taking the first rehabilitation efforts in the 1950's as a point of departure, particularly the two urban development plans from the years 1977 and 2005 contributed to preserve the old town in its entirety and to develop it further with care. With the appointment to World Heritage, these efforts were confirmed on the one hand, on the other hand this was also the occasion to draw up an interim balance and to order the objective system in a new way. The suitable instrument for this purpose is the World Heritage management plan. With this integrated approach it has been possible to show that, in addition to pure tasks of the protection of historic buildings and monuments, a great variety of themes from the entire municipal area of life is affected by the World Heritage status.
