Abstract
Regular express coach services in Germany make sense from an economic point of view. This is the outcome of a study which predicts a market share in national long distance travelling of at least 5 %. The survey was carried out for an exemplary distance of 300 kilometer. The revision of the current regulatory regime would change a situation, in which a launch of new services is only possible when the railways have not yet served the route. A deregulation would hence not only stimulate inter- and intramodal competition in long distance travelling, it could also serve as a new ecological benchmark in travelling. This especially holds for different rates of capacity utilization. Socially deprived people would furthermore benefit from increased mobility, because international experiences have already shown substantial lower prices in comparison to other modes of transport.
