Abstract
For many years, household travel surveys have been very important prerequisites to gain knowledge about the travel behaviour of the population. In Germany two extensive travel surveys - KONTIV and SrV - have been applied since the 1970ies. KONTIV is gathering data to describe the average travel behaviour for the whole area of Germany as well as for each federal state. Compared with this, the SrV survey is concentrated at behavioural data at the urban level. In 2008, these two oldest household travel surveys in Germans will be realised parallel in time for the first time in their history. Due this occasion, the article explains the variety of objectives and requirements for both surveys which are needed at different levels of transportation planning and policy. The depiction starts with the historical development of KONTIV and SrV. difu
