Abstract
The market outlook for Europe's rail freight carriers is very favourable yet numerous obstacles have to be overcome, resulting from the past role of rail freight carriers as authorities and the unbalanced regulatory framework for the transport market. Nevertheless, in recent years, the competitive situation of Germany's rail sector has witnessed notable improvements made by the DB Railion, the market leader, in the areas of productivity and the service package on offer, and also due to the intra-modal competition of Germany's rail network, a factor more evident here than anywhere in Europe. In order to foster growth, rail freight carriers have to adopt a strategy aimed at overcoming the existing restrictions imposed by Europe's frontiers. This can be achieved with the help of technology and administrative changes. Railion places great emphasis on high-level investment in technology while giving priority to cooperation and competition in order to optimize trans-border transport. difu
