Abstract
Small and medium-sized cities and regions have a difficult starting position with regard to high quality public transport solutions. The increase of car ownership and use is bigger, as it is much more difficult to offer public transport which is competitive to the private car. Public Transport is based in most cases on bus, while more attractive and especially rail-bound solutions are often not affordable with regard to the lower demand in those areas. The Interreg-project HiTrans has dealt with these issues in various project strands. The results which have been achieved, being available as a Best Practice Guide and Planning Guidelines, will be of interest far beyond the project partners for all who deal with the design of public transport services. difu
