Abstract
Relying on the latest forms of technology, it cannot be convincingly stated that inland shipping is responsible for the lowest degree of environmental impact vis-à-vis the rail sector. Neither does a comparison with the road transport sector show any more notable advantages. By and large, inland shipping takes second place in a comparison of emission factors. The railway sector fares better but is negatively affected by noise emission. Road transport is, in this regard, the worst alternative among the modes of transport. The irreversible impact on our natural environment by changes to local waterways is of more serious concern than the impact made by inland shipping. With regard to hydraulic engineering projects, it would be an advantage to always consider suitable alternatives. difu
