Abstract
Automated people movers usually circulate on elevated tracks unhindered by other means of transport. People movers carry up to 8000 passengers per hour and direction and this fairly fast (up to 50 km/h) over short and medium distances. Their vehicles are pulled by a centrally driven cable. A result of this, the investment and maintenance costs are low compared to road and rail transport. People movers cause little environmental disturbances, need less energy and maintenance than traditional means of public transport. Their availability is above 99 percent. They climb up to 12 percent take narrow curves with a radius of as little as 50 metres, can be built above and on the surface or in tunnels. They need little ground space and are built in a short period of time. In Europe, Italy is at the helm with automated people movers: MiniMetros run in Pisa and Perugia and a Cable Liner operates in Venice. People movers travelling on air beds are in operation at Zürich airport and in the car-free Austrian village of Serfaus.
