Abstract

Mehr noch als in anderen Städten wird in Valenciennes und Umgebung der neuen Straßenbahn eine stadtbelebende Funktion zugewiesen mit dem Ziel, die Stadt neu um das Zentrum herum zu strukturieren. Hier stehen deutlich nicht Verkehrswirtschaftlichkeit oder Beförderungskapazität im Vordergrund, sondern langfristige stadtplanerische Ziele. Die erste Etappe ist in diesem Sommer in Betrieb gegangen, im Juni 2007 soll die Strecke vollendet werden. Dann wird die Agglomeration rund um Valenciennes eine 18 km lange Linie betreiben und etwa 340 Mio Euro ausgegeben haben. difuMore than any other cities, Valenciennes and the surrounding area assign the new tramway an invigorating function to restructure the area around the city centre. In this case neither the traffic efficiency nor the transportation capacity come to the fore but longer-term objectives for urban plans have been taken into consideration. This summer the first stage has been brought on line and in July 2007, the route is expected to be finished.
