Abstract

Die Europäische Stadt steht für kompakte städtische Strukturen, Bausubstanz unterschiedlicher Zeiten und eine lebendige Nutzungsmischung durch Leben, Wohnen und Arbeiten. Der Erhalt, die Erneuerung und die Weiterentwicklung der Europäischen Stadt mit und aus den vorhandenen baulichen und räumlichen Gegebenheiten ist seit vielen Jahrzehnten eine Aufgabe, der sich Bund, Länder und Kommunen gemeinsam stellen. Ein zentrales Instrument zur Bewältigung der komplexen Herausforderungen städtischer Entwicklungen in Deutschland ist seit über 45 Jahren die Bund-Länder-Städtebauförderung. Das Programm Städtebaulicher Denkmalschutz steht hierbei für eine integrierte Stadtentwicklung aus dem Bestand. In seiner heutigen Ausrichtung und mit seiner bundesweiten Ausdehnung ist es europaweit beispielhaft für erfolgreiches Handeln bei der Bewahrung des kulturellen Erbes und der zukunftsfähigen Entwicklung der (Europäischen) Stadt. Das Europäische Kulturerbejahr 2018 ist Anlass, in dem Buch über das Programm, seine Projekte und Erfahrungen zu berichten.The European town and city represents compact urban structures, building fabric from different eras, and dynamic use for social activity, housing, and work. The preservation, renewal and development of the European town and city - with and based on its current architectural and spatial forms - has for several decades been a project faced together by the national government, the federal states, and municipalities. For more than 45 years, one central instrument for coping with the complex challenges of urban development in Germany has been the Urban Development Support scheme provided by national government and by the federal states. The Protection of Urban Architectural Heritage scheme works towards integrated urban development based on the existing building stock. In its current form and following its extension across Germany, it has across Europe become a byword for successful conservation of cultural heritage and sustainable development of the (European) town and city. On the occasion of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, this is a report on the programme, its projects, and the experiences thus gained.
