Abstract
So far, European cities have not been known for using cable cars as part of their public transport systems. In Germany, a debate about the potential of this special means of transport started along with the new cable car while the Koblenz Garden Show in 2011. In order to estimate the potential of aerial cable cars for use in public transport data on 23 worldwide systems have been analysed. This research allowed for the first time the determination of average costs as well as the average travel speed of urban cable cars. The real potential for urban cable cars has been identified in the connection of less accessible areas or locations not integrated with the urban fabric.
