Abstract
During the last years internet-based matching platforms for long distance passenger transport have experienced a rapid growth and are today estimated to be frequently used by more than one million travellers in Germany. Besides the socio-demographic analysis of these user groups empirical studies now present major findings about the induced impacts on traffic systems. Based on various factors one of the central conclusions drawn by the authors is a significant net reduction of traffic: User survey data revealed that on the one hand the amount of traffic reduced by the share of participants who give up their own car trip in favour of the shared ride is much larger than the amount of traffic induced. On the other hand it became obvious that the additional mobility option represents a factor for an at least temporary renunciation of car ownership. Hence, the resulting changes in modal choice also account for a secondary effect. difu
