The paper focuses on the modified urban migration patterns that were generated by the reurbanization process. The socio-spatial processes in the core city of Zurich are quantified based on censuses from 1990 and 2000. The urban migration patterns are analyzed by a complete survey of all individual relocations between 1990 and 2002. The unique database allows the combination of both long and crosssection analyses. This leads to a deeper understanding of the processes taking place. Reurbanization does not represent a fundamental reversal of the ongoing urban sprawl. However, it does indicate qualitative changes that affect housing as well as the social pattern of the cities involved and the relationship between the core city, suburbs and urban hinterland. In addition to the positive effect of upgraded neighborhoods, people are forced to move away from these newly desirable areas. In upgraded and downgraded neighborhoods, both the in- and out-migration is analyzed with regard to the subpopulations involved A special focus is put on the structure and changes in housing and the links with the movement patterns of subpopulations in order to analyze the overall impact on the urban fabric. difu
