After the German parliament decided to make Berlin the new capital of Germany, all the capital functions and agencies had to be integrated into the existing city. This task was to be carried out in parallel, simultaneous steps, while at the same time re-establishing the politicalsocialand urban planning connections between the two halves of a city that had been divided for almost 30 years. To accomplish this, the Development Programme for the Capital City Berlin Parliament and Government District. was launched by the Berlin Senate 20 years ago, on June 17, 1993. With the development of Berlin into a capital, metropolis and re-united civic city, not only were once divisive barriers overcome, but a functioning capital district was created in the heart of the city, which has since become an integral component of Berlin.
