Die Orangerie in Belvedere bei Weimar. Natur und Architektur im Kontext höfischer Repräsentation 1728-1928.

Abstract

Die Orangerie des ehemaligen Lustschlosses der Herzöge von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach in Belvedere bei Weimar zeichnet sich im besonderen Maße durch ihre kontinuierliche Nutzung seit den 1720er-Jahren bis heute aus. Daran knüpfen sich unmittelbar Fragen an, denen in der Untersuchung nachgegangen wird: nach den Formen und den Funktionen der Orangerie, nach ihrer Einbindung in den baulich-strukturellen wie auch semantischen Zusammenhang der Schloss- und Gartenanlage und nicht zuletzt nach ihrer Ikonologie vor dem Hintergrund der sich wandelnden Naturauffassungen und Repräsentationsmechanismen in dem zugrundeliegenden Untersuchungszeitraum von 200 Jahren. Die Arbeit basiert zu großen Teilen auf den umfangreich ausgewerteten Quellen. Aber erst in der Verschränkung von Bau-, Funktions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte sowie im analytischen Vergleich von Strukturen und Typologien zeigen sich die vielfältigen Nutzungs- und Bedeutungsebenen der Orangerie. Diese werden darüber hinaus in die übergreifenden architektur- und gartenhistorischen Theoriediskurse des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts eingebettet.The orangery of the dukes of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach s former pleasure palace in the Belvedere Park located at the edge of Weimar is particularly exceptional on account of its continuous use from the 1720s to the present. This is directly linked to questions that are pursued in this analysis: the forms and functions of the orangery, its integration into the architectonic-structural as well as the semantic context of the palace and park complex and, not least, its iconology before the backdrop of the shifting concepts of nature and mechanisms of courtly representation in the 200-year period considered in this analysis. The work is largely based on an extensive assessment of the primary sources. Nonetheless it is only the interweaving of the history of its construction, function and reception as well as an analytical comparison of structures and typologies that reveals the diverse levels of the orangery s use and meaning. These are additionally embedded within the overarching 18th- and 19th-century discourses on the history of architecture and gardens.
