The expanding alliance system in the air freight sector and concomitant market concentration is prompting airlines and shipping agents to review future strategies. Closely integrated partnerships allow air cargo carriers and shipping agents to jointly promote their services among freight forwarders whereby solutions of any global logistics problems can be offered simultaneously. Lufthansa Cargo AG is - together with the 'Lufthansa Global Partners' scheme - a pioneer in this field. Especially the European air transport market is witness to a growing urgency towards consolidation. Strategic partnerships - coupled with the formation of the 'virtual consolidators' scheme - are seen as worthwhile marketing alternatives, which also appeal to companies with a limited market share in the air freight sector. Similar to passenger air transport, the element of competition will, in future, not be so pronounced between individual air freight carriers but between trade associations and allied companies. difu
