The strategic dimensions of knowledge industries in urban development.

Abstract

Wissensindustrien und deren Relevanz für die Stadtentwicklung stehen im Zentrum des Beitrages. Insbesondere die Lokalisierungskriterien und Allokationsmuster von Wissensinstitutionen, also etwa von Universitäten, F&E-Einrichtungen sowie Technologie- und Wissenschaftsparks treten dabei in den Vordergrund. Mit einer vergleichenden Analyse deutscher, europäischer und globaler Fälle entziffert der Autor dabei sechs unterschiedliche Dimensionen der Wissensräume. Strategische Planung und Policy-Gesichtspunkte bilden dafür einen wichtigen Fokus.After the gradual demise of traditional industries in the last quarter of the 20th century, knowledge industries have become the new hope for cities, policy-makers and city development agencies. Though there is much rhetoric about the importance of knowledge industries and knowledge workers in a city, in practice, there are few strategic visions for the development of knowledge spaces. Given the complex spatial logic of knowledge industries, and the great number of stakeholders in planning and related decision-making processes with quite different interests, developing local knowledge industries requires special expertise. The paper addresses six dimensions of developing knowledge spaces in a city and explores the multiple challenges policy-makers are facing when merging city development with knowledge development.
