Abstract
Significant changes in traffic volumes along with budget restraints require a most flexible and efficient use of the existing traffic infrastructure. The traffic management will need Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to tackle the problems ahead. ITS have raised major expectations towards their potential. Otherwise, they are just one part of comprehensive strategies to reduce traffic problems. The German ITS Manual will support local authorities in the purposive deployment of ITS as part of the traffic management. It was developed for the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development. Lessons learned from experiences with ITS, interdependencies and interactions as well as the potential for synergies have been compiled into a concise manual for those responsible for the deployment of ITS in Germany. difu
