Since their first edition in the year 1951, the German Federal Garden Shows are considered as a tried and tested means of urban rehabilitation. In the framework of the German Federal Garden Show (BUGA) Koblenz 2011, which was successful also in economic terms, significant building and design measures were implemented in urban planning. It has shown that the approach of German (Federal) Garden Shows offers much quantifiable and qualifiable potential as a sustainable urban development project, as a cultural event as well as a horticultural performance show in spite of all challenges and changed conditions for the cities that realise them. This article outlines which expectations and challenges were associated with the BUGA. The communication management which was used was able to convince the citizens despite initial scepticism and to achieve a high identification with the project. Finally the essential economic and socio- economic effects of the BUGA are outlined, stock is taken and a short outlook into the future of German Federal Garden Shows is given.
