Abstract
The core network of the suburban railway of Munich (S-Bahn) is one of the most densely used railway networks in Germany. The branches are merged within the city of Munich by a core track section (so called Stammstrecke). This 11 km long section between Pasing and Ostbahnhof - with up to 30 trains per hour and per direction - is one of the most frequented railway routes in Europe. Even a minor delay of a single train - occurred on the outer branches of the network - leads to additional delays in the core section of the system. Within the scope of a joint-project between DB Netz and DB Regio, DB International GmbH has been assigned to examine the Suburban Railway operation. One of the main objectives - by using simulation software of railway operation - was to achieve an improved understanding of the system regarding actions, reactions and coherences.
