Abstract
After tramway systems in Great Britain had been demolished nearly completely in the 1950's, a short renaissance of light rail could be observed in the 1980's. Today, seven systems are operating in the United Kingdom. Deregulation of the public transport market made investment into cost intensive light rail systems more challenging again. Only in 2004, plans for several projects were put on hold by the central government in London. Unacceptable cost rises were quoted as a reason. This article aims at representing the current status of light rail systems in the United Kingdom as well as giving a tangible outlook into the sector's future. difu
