Abstract
In public transport, a considerable amount of money is being spent on IT-based applications such as 'real time' and on monitors at bus / tram stops, yet our knowledge of their behavioural impact on current or potential customers is very limited. This paper presents a review of the relevant literature, focussing especially on user response to public transport information offered via the telephone, mobile devices, the Internet and on monitors at bus / tram stops. Furthermore the findings of a questionnaire returned by a number of experts are discussed. Both the literature review and the opinions of the experts show that more evaluation studies need to include customers' perspectives. The main conclusions that can be drawn from this paper ist that the impact of public transport information delivered via IT-based applications on modal split should not be overestimated nor should its potential overall effect be underestimated. difu
