Abstract

Nearly every school has an open space that can be used in interaction with indoor facilities. In its 20 years of activity the ÖISS working group “school grounds”, together with its members, has created awareness for the importance of open spaces and the variety of possibilities they offer. A major achievement of this working group is that school grounds are considered essential planning projects in architectural design competitions. A broad range of best-practice examples can be found under www.schulfreiraum.com, curated by the working group. In the coming years, open spaces are expected to play a more important role in the education of pedagogues. Additionally, appropriate solutions will be required for challenges such as “risky play” or the high level of usage of open spaces in populated city areas.Nahezu jede Schule besitzt einen eigenen Schulfreiraum bzw. eine Freifläche, den bzw. die sie nutzen kann. Im Zusammenspiel mit den Innenräumen bieten diese Raum für die Entwicklung der Schüler*innen. Wenn der Freiraum entsprechend gestaltet und in den Schulalltag integriert ist, kann er vielseitig genutzt werden. Der länderübergreifende, interdisziplinär besetzte Arbeitskreis „Schulfreiräume“ des ÖISS versteht sich seit 20 Jahren als Koordinationsstelle für Fragen und Initiativen zur Freiraumgestaltung.
