Abstract
This year the delivery of the first modern low floor tram sees its 20th anniversary. This is the reason for bringing together the basic facts that account for the design of that kind of railway vehicles. Firstly the definition of low floor technology is presented. That is, to say a low floor height inside the vehicle, which results in several technical requirements. Possible solutions to these requirements are discussed. Also the general rules for configurations of railway vehicles, especially trams, are worked out. At last the commonly known wheel/rail guidance systems are illustrated and their technical functions are explained. difu
