Abstract
Since the beginning of the financial crisis, horror scenarios are being proclaimed for Germany's economy, and the media as well as economic associations announced a credit crunch in weekly turns. Since some weeks the all clear sign is given not only with respect to economic development, but also particularly with regard to the credit supply of small and medium-sized firms. In the framework of the article empirical material is presented which indicates that particularly the satisfactory credit supply of small and medium-sized firms can be attributed inter alia to the specific banking system which was considered to be old-fashioned before the crisis with approximately 1500 regionally oriented banks and savings banks. Spatial proximity, knowledge of the region, trust and responsibility are important factors for stable banking markets and can compensate any disadvantages of regional banking markets, even if this is largely ignored in science and politics.
