The University of Dortmund Chair for Transport Systems and Logistics has interviewed haulage contractors involved with the small parcel business in NRW as well as with heavy goods and long haul freight transport, about the introduction of toll charges. Quantitative and qualitative aspects have been taken into account to typify individual companies, as has the impact of road tolls, to give an overview of the current situation in Germany. Once the initial problems were solved prior to the introduction of road toll charges in Germany, the survey showed fairly positive results. Problems relating to the installation of 'on board units' in vehicles - which are subject to the payment of toll charges - and hardware / software have mostly been overcome. It is worth noting the toll system's impact on the different sectors of the freight transport business. The increase in costs - coupled with the possibility to pass on such costs - is directly related to the size, and the scale of operations, of the companies involved. difu
