Abstract
Border areas were often a topic in spatial research: with "closed" borders these regions were often investigated from the aspect of their peripheral situation and the accompanying economic separation. On the other hand, discussions focussed on a number of new regional development chances following the "opening" of borders. The ARL, too, has devoted numerous research projects to the topic of border areas over the past years. The goal of the "European Border Area Research" study is to evaluate the scientific and academic knowledge up to now in this field and derive relevant research questions for the ARL. Research in future will have to look into the further development of suitable forms of cooperation, the correct definition of the cooperation framework and the choice of suitable analytical methods for checking the success, for example.
