Abstract
Die Rolle des Staates in der Regionalförderung wird am Beispiel der Washington New Town in Nordostengland kritisch analysiert. Es handelt sich hier um ein wirtschaftlich einseitig auf den Bergbau ausgerichtetes Gebiet mit hoher Arbeitslosigkeit. Es wird festgestellt, dass die Entwicklung des Arbeitsmarkts und der Bevölkerung in diesem und anderen Fällen nicht den angestrebten Zielen entsprach. Die Ursachen dafür werden erläutert. wb
