Abstract
Fully-flexible collective public transport services have been known in Germany for 40 years. The article provides a brief overview on the history of this concept and the current situation of so-called ridepooling services. While ridepooling is of topical interest, thanks to the growth of app-based booking and trip planning, it is useful to consider past experiences as well and learn from them for the present and future. The authors give an overview of start-ups and online-based demand responsive transport services and present a set of hypotheses for the suitable use of ridepooling in the wider transport system, based on its core characteristics and features.
