Abstract
Mass transport, as local and regional public passenger transport is called in North America, is undergoing dramatic changes in the western US-States of Washington, Oregon, California and Utah. Based on public support and positive majority votes, as well as the new American dream of living, working and spending spare time without the hassle of commuting and queuing, huge sums are invested in all forms of surface transport as well as aerial trams and people movers above ground. European suppliers of rolling stock are already present with plants in Sacramento (Siemens), Salt Lake City (Stadler Rail and Doppelmayr/Garaventa) and maintenance facilities in Vallejo near San Francisco (Alstom). However entering the North American market can be tricky. United Rail Group Inc., based in Jacksonville, Florida, headed by the Swiss engineer Norwin Voegeli, is assisting overseas manufacturers and service providers in entering this quickly emerging market.
