Abstract

Die Steigerung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und wirtschaftliche Prosperität galten lange Zeit als übergeordnete Ziele der Stadtentwicklung. Doch die erkennbaren Kosten und Dysfunktionalitäten eines überwiegend renditegetriebenen Wachstums führten zu einem Umdenken. Die Bewältigung wirtschaftlicher Strukturbrüche, wachsende soziale Ungleichheiten und vor allem die ungelösten Umweltprobleme und der ökologische Fußabdruck unserer Städte erfordern Strategien, die an den Zielen der Nachhaltigkeit und am Gemeinwohl orientiert sind. Auch zivilgesellschaftliche Initiativen und Wirtschaftsakteure verfolgen vermehrt eine am Gemeinwohl orientierte Agenda in der Stadtentwicklung.Ulrich Burmeister explores the importance of double internal development and public spaces for sustainable and socially just urban development. The common good agenda in urban development is examined as well as the overall socio-ecological transformation of the city. A special focus is put on public spaces, these are the spaces through which all people have access to public goods. Green space in cities is increasingly becoming one of the hard factors in urban development, because green infrastructures, the climatic balancing functions of green space and a high quality of stay in open space are value-creating factors. As a result, land prices are influenced and public spaces are subject to planning conflicts and negotiation processes. The current restrictions of public spaces under pandemic conditions emphasize their importance and their development potentials.
