Abstract
Looking back at the past century, the historic heritage has experienced different evaluations in the framework of changing models. The respective pressure for adaptation to the current technical, economic and social conditions and the evaluation of their value in building history for future generations determine the future of the buildings of older building epochs until today. The more significant the individual building is assessed to before the respective location, the city or even the country, the less it has to be measured by current standards and challenges. However, only very few of our historic buildings benefit from this special status. The role of the building heritage in urban development in the past decades cannot be described in a universally valid way, but nevertheless different trends in dealing with the historic building stock can be recognized, which were always also an expression of social and urban development change.
