Abstract

Europe's large railway companies have reacted differently to the arrival of low cost airlines, Germany's DB has sought to attract price-sensitive travellers to, the existing train since pattern by, offering promotional fares. The intention is to generate additional traffic by using a carefully balanced seat contingency system and trying to avoid any incidental costs. In turn the state-owned rail carrier of Italy and France have reacted by setting up subsidiary rail companies, which offer a range of services and -fares under the banner of a separate market identity (TrenOK, iDTGV). This allows for more flexibility in the tariff system and quality of service on offer while simultaneously reducing the complexity of rail fares and costs in general. Initial reactions of the railway clientele have been positive. difu
