Abstract
The approximate 100-hectare former housing estate of the US Armed Forces on the outskirts of Heidelberg, but in the middle of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, was the starting point for an experimental planning procedure of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Heidelberg. Over a period of four years, she first conceived and managed a scenario process leading to a development vision and was then responsible for the content of the „Dynamic Masterplan“. This involved testing new ways of interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral cooperation. Together with Heidelberg’s administration, planning firm KCAP (Zurich) and many other participants, an urban design of “diversity in unity” was created. The complex process revealed both opportunities and risks for integrative planning for the Patrick Henry Village, particularly in terms of synchronized planning, which needs reflection in the context of the IBA Heidelberg as a living laboratory.
