For the first time, there is positive proof that double-deck carriage of containers by rail is a realistic option in line with German - and thus also European - transport economics. This report offers a comprehensive overview of the existing technical guidelines for infrastructure and vehicle technology, which the above-mentioned study deals with in detail. Also featured are legislative norms, plans for tracks considered suitable along selected routes, levels of investment and aspects of profitability. Current plans call for a network of double-deck container routes to be set up in the hinterland of Germany's seaports, the intention being to devise a system that is a technically viable and cost efficient alternative to conventional road and rail freight transport.
