Based on a well-structured comparison of the rail track charging systems of Germany, France and Switzerland, this study shows that their objectives - usually of a similar nature - tend to be approached in a variety of ways. The national differences of these systems highlight the inherent dangers of inefficient, trans-border controls, prompting the authors to come up with diverse conclusions about the benefits of a harmonized system. The rail track's element of pricing needs to be standardized across Europe if the various types of rolling stock are taken into consideration.
