The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows: 1) Rail freight traffic is growing. The most important growth regions can be seen in Russia or in cross-border transports on the east-west-axis. Concerning operations, this growth is closely interlinked with steady growing average haul distances. 2) Liberalization is not a one-way street to success but increases pressure on efficiency improvement for ail market players. 3) Alliance models are gradually enlarged.
