Sie sind Ort des Erholens, Repräsentationsraum, Ort der Bildung und des Sports, sollen zur Entlastung der Hitzeinseln in der Stadt beitragen und nach den immer stärker werdenden Starkregenereignissen helfen, die städtische Kanalisation zu entlasten. Gleichzeitig sind die Mittel für die Pflege und Unterhaltung äußerst knapp. Das Bild einer "eierlegenden Wollmilchsau" ist daher für das Grün der Städte nicht abwegig. In dem Beitrag werden vier strategische Ansätze aufgezeigt, wie mit Freiräumen die Städte profiliert werden können: Anlässe schaffen, damit in der zunehmend diversifizierten Gesellschaft der Freiraum zum öffentlichen Ort der Kommunikation und Interaktion der Stadtgesellschaft wird / Koproduktion und Selbermachen als die aktive Einbindung der Stadtgesellschaft in die Herstellung, Weiterentwicklung und Unterhaltung öffentlich nutzbarer Räume / Multicodierung als die mehrdimensionale Überlagerung und Verknüpfung unterschiedlicher Interessenlagen und ressortübergreifende Kooperation im Freiraum / Verstetigung, also die nachhaltige Pflege und Unterhaltung der geschaffenen Freiraumwerte.The expectations with regard to open spaces in cities are enormous. They are places of recreation, spaces of representation, places of education and of sports, they are supposed to contribute to the relief of heat concentrations in the city and they are supposed to relieve the urban canalisation after the increasingly frequent heavy rainfalls. At the same time the funds for their maintenance are very limited. The image of an allrounder is therefore not out of place for green spaces in the city.
