Nahezu jeder zweite Stadtbewohner lebt in einer solchen Wohnung. Die Siedlungen des industriellen Massenwohnungsbaus prägen damit die Struktur und das Bild vieler Städte im Osten Europas und sind oftmals die dominante Wohnform. Mit den Umbrüchen in der Gesellschaft der postsozialistischen Länder waren wesentliche Paradigmenwechsel in der Stadtentwicklung verbunden, die nicht ohne Auswirkung auf die Großwohnsiedlungen blieben. In dem Beitrag werden grundlegende Problemstellungen der aktuellen Entwicklung der Siedlungen aufgezeigt und deren Konsequenzen für die mittelfristigen Perspektiven dieser Gebiete in Ostmitteleuropa dargestellt. difuGenesis, state and perspectives of large housing estates in eastern Central Europe. In the post-socialist countries of eastern Central Europe about 10 million dwellings in large housing estates of the 1960-1980's exist. Nearly every second urban inhabitant is living in such a dwelling. Thus the settlement of industrial mass housing construction shape the structure and the image of many cities in Eastern Europe and are often the dominant form of housing. With the upheavals in the societies of the post-socialist countries major changes in the paradigms of urban development were connected which do not remain without impacts on the large housing estates.
